The Fashion Design Certificate program emphasizes core studies in design concepts, technical skills with courses in sewing, patternmaking and draping, and digital design. This program fulfills the requirements you’ll need to become an assistant designer, seamstress or tailor, sample maker, or a fashion illustrator.

Program Highlights

Fashion Design Certificate curriculum (492 hours)

First Quarter

Elements & Principles of Fashion Design (48 hours)

  • Learn to engage with fashion design to foster design identity.

  • Conceptualize creative garments.

  • Communicate with various industry segments in analyzing and deconstructing fashion for specific markets.

Fabrics & Color Theory (48 hours)

  • Discuss textile production regulations and selecting textiles based on fibers.

  • Explore color use, color anomalies, color connections to emotional response, symbolism and trends, principles for combining colors, and analyzing color in designed products.

Second Quarter

Sewing (72 hours)

  • Learn how to put fabric pieces together to create a garment with flat seams, curved seams, darts, tucks and gatherings.

  • Explore the beginnings of tech packs (link to blog post).

Digital Fashion Illustration (48 hours)

  • Learn how to use Adobe illustrator to translate their fashion looks and draw technical flats (blog post).

  • Develop a library of colors, surface designs and stitches.

Fashion Illustration (48 hours)

  • Develop the “Fashion Figure.”

  • Learn to illustrate a model wearing a variety of garments.

  • Explore flats and illustrate them by hand.

Third Semester

Draping (48 hours)

  • Explore draping muslin on a mannequin to create a garment.

  • Identify and use the grain of the fabric to create fullness and design lines.

Patternmaking (48 hours)

  • Learn flat patternmaking.

  • Apply the slash and spread method to create a paper pattern.

Fashion Portfolio (48 hours)

  • Explore tools for creating a web presence to showcase your best work.

  • Create a lookbook, line sheet and a multi page portfolio.

Program Cost

NYSD offers low tuition and flexible tuition payment plans to make your education with us affordable and manageable.

The Fashion Design Certificate tuition and fees for the 2019/2020 academic year are as follows:

Admission Requirements

  • New students must have either completed the Fashion Design Foundations program or have previous knowledge in sewing, digital and hand illustration. Students who are waiving the Fashion Design Foundation program will need to submit a copy of transcripts or certificates, and either past work or a portfolio to the Admissions Office.

  • High School Diploma or the GED, or call us about taking the Ability to Benefit (ATB) test.

  • Classes are conducted in English, therefore students be have some English proficiency

  • Identification: US residents must submit a copy of a photo ID. Foreign students must submit a copy of a valid passport.
