The Fashion Design Foundation program is the first level of the fashion design pathway designed for student desiring to build a career in fashion. This provides students with an overview of fashion design and help them develop basic skills in machine and hand sewing, using Illustration tools in Adobe Photoshop® and Illustrator®, and fashion drawing. Through this short 3-month program, students gain the foundational knowledge and skills needed to enroll in our rigorous and technical skills focused Fashion Design Certificate program.

The Fashion Design Foundation courses are prerequisites to the Fashion Design Certificate program. Students may test out of any of these courses by taking an exam and having their prior skills and knowledge evaluated by an NYSD Director or Instructor. If you are applying for a wavier of any Fashion Design Foundation course, you will need to submit a copy of your transcripts or certificates, and either past work or a portfolio to the Admissions Office.

Fashion Design Foundation Certificate Curriculum (120 hours)

Introduction to Fashion Illustration (24 hours)

In this course, students will become acquainted with some basic drawing techniques and their application to fashion. Their new skills will be used to create at least 3 rendered fashion looks. They will also begin curating a process journal on day one and it will be updated as reference for their personal design aesthetic and mood board. (prerequisite: none)

Introduction to Sewing (48 hours)

This course is an introduction to the basics of sewing by both hand and machine. Students will create a binder that they will fill with samples of: stitches, seam finishes, and closures, all of which are made by the student. They will learn why and when to use different finishes. What type of zipper to use and where to put it. Students will be introduced to the terms and tools used in the industry. (prerequisite: none)

Introduction to Digital Fashion Illustration (48 hours)

In this course, students will become acquainted with some basic CAD techniques using Adobe Photoshop® and Illustrator®. They will begin curating a process journal on day one and it will be updated weekly and serve as a reference point for all of their work for the course. Students will learn skills in Adobe Photoshop® and Illustrator® that will allow them to curate a mood board, t-shirt graphic screen, t-shirt color ways, a line sheet and a multi-page presentation. (prerequisite: none)

NYSD offers low tuition and flexible tuition payment plans to make your education with us affordable and manageable.

The Fashion Design Foundation tuition and fees for the 2019/2020 academic year are as follows:

Admission Requirements

  • High School Diploma or the GED, or call us about taking the Ability to Benefit (ATB) test.

  • Classes are conducted in English, therefore students be have some English proficiency.

  • Identification: US residents must submit a copy of a photo ID. Foreign students must submit a copy of a valid passport.
